The cox has absolute authority over a crew of either four or eight rowers. He or she sits in either the back or front of the boat and steers with the aid of a rudder. A microphone and a set of speakers allow the to communicate with the crew.
At Manchester we split our coxing squad into senior and novice coxes. If you’ve had some coxing experience already you’ll become a senior cox straight away. If you’ve never coxed before, you’re a novice cox and you’ll be introduced into the role gradually under the guidance of the coxing captain and senior coes. Each week you will attend sessions to improve your coxing ability. You’ll learn how to steer, take command of the crew, spot technical errors and motivate the rowers.
